Watercolor and textile on 4" embroidery canvas with a tiger's eye inlay. Commission.
Thedora was a Byzantine ruler from the 6th century, who hailed from the area of modern-day Syria. I had a wonderful time learning about this undervalued historic figure who was known for her colorful life experiences as an actress, sex worker advocate, and eventual ascension into political power as the Augusta of the Eastern Roman Empire. Although her background was salacious, Theodora is most known for her skillful and intelligent management of Byzantine affairs. Theodora was a champion of women's rights during a time when they were disproportionately and negatively affected by marriage and property laws. Through her legislative influence, she changed the tide for many young women with laws to prevent trafficking of girls. She also altered divorce laws to equitable success.
This rendition is based on her shrine, found in the Italian Basilica of San Vitale. She is buried in modern day Turkey.
